Babywearing: Awemama

Have you heard of Awemama yet? They are a new babywearing subscription program that I am extremely excited about! They just launched and I had the privilege of trying the service out in advanced. I was asked about what  carrier type I preferred, what size I like, the fabric, allergy information, and a few more questions. After that, Awemama handpicked a carrier to send me.

I did not know in advanced what was being sent so I watched tracking like a hawk. When it arrived, I immediately opened it and WOW WOW WOW inside was a new wrap from one of my favorite babywearing companies! Bijou Wear Plaidass Bravo!! Bravo is an Awemama exclusive and to my surprise, I was sent my base size–9!!

For $29.95 per month, you get to try out a carrier for up to 28 days and you can either buy the carrier (minus the initial $29.95 since that was already paid) or send it back to try another. This is such a convenient way to try all the carriers! When you buy a wrap from a retailer and it isn’t love, you usually cannot return it. This is an excellent alternative! The carrier comes washed and ready for wear. Awemama also keeps up on carrier maintenance so you don’t have to worry about that either.

Bijou Wear Plaidass Bravo is such a stellar wrap! It is a double weave 100% cotton wrap in a gorgeous merlot and gray. This was a really comfortable wrap with Minerva (20 lbs) AND Maxine (~40 lbs) so that was a plus. I comfortably did a single layer carry with Max which really blew me away. Bravo also helped my double hammock be rock solid with Minerva. This wrap great for heavy babies and toddlers.

Thank you so much Awemama for letting me be a part of your launch!! You all are going to go far!!

Review: Kol Kol Baby Carrier Onbuhimo

Kol Kol Baby Carrier is a company out of India that makes affordable and comfortable baby carriers. Fun fact: The company is named after the first words that Bayiravi’s (owner) son spoke! So sweet!!  They will soon be releasing an onbunimo and I had the pleasure of trying it out .

Minerva is about 20 lbs and 28 inches tall.  She fit great in the carrier. With onbuhimos, all the weight is carried in your shoulders, so one of the most important aspects of the carrier for me  is the padding. Kol Kol’s padding was so soft! It reminded me of a pillow. It was very comfortable on my shoulders.  I also like their hood which is rare because I usually can do without a hood on most carriers.

The carrier even fit Maxine comfortably! She will be four years old soon and is in 4T clothes. The onbuhimo fit great in my diaper bag which is a plus since I pack so much stuff when we leave the house and since there is so little fabric, it is  ideal for warmer weather as well.  The fabric breathed very well.  I think that this will be on my list of carriers to buy!

Review: Bijou Wear!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me screaming BIJOU TENCEL IS MY JAM more than a couple of times. Finalllllllly, I am going to tell you why you and everyone you know needs to try it.

Jaime Gassmann is the mastermind behind Bijou Wear.  The company is named after her husband’s nickname for their baby. The love Jaime has for this company is so clear. She makes sure everything is perfect before she releases it. The wraps that I recently tried are Windmills Field of Dreams and Blast Lilac.

When I first saw Windmills Field of Dreams, I fell in love with the color. Green always looks great in a wrap. I questioned the windmills for about two seconds. I like them. I like them a lot. Especially when one lands right on Maxine’s bottom. When I wrapped with this, I was shocked at how a wrap so soft could make my toddler feel not-so toddler-like. Maxine is around 28 pounds and I could easily carry her around in a double hammock for an hour no problem. I did not need to adjust too much once I got the carry in place.

Check out that candy cane chest belt!!

IMG_0690

This was also great in a front carry! Front wrap cross carry is still one of my go-to carries with Max, especially when she wants to nurse. Windmills glides easily and the width helped make it even easier to make my carries better with this wrap. Windmills is great for newborns especially since it is so soft. It would be awesome for toddlers too in multi-layer carries. It rocked a slip knot, but my favorite way to finish a carry with this wrap was with sling rings. I would recommend this wrap for all wrappers.

Here is a short tutorial on how to do a front wrap cross carry with Windmills Field of Dreams!

Blast lilac!! How I miss thee! This wrap was the same blend as Windmills, but it felt SO different! Magic! This design is my favorite out of all things Bijou Wear. Maxine loved this wrap as well and constantly asked for ups in this purple beauty. My favorite carry to do with this wrap was a ruck. It is flat with a little cush on the shoulders in my opinion. It pleated well on its own too.

Blast Lilac almost always put Maxine to sleep. There was no fighting this wrap. Denser than windmills, this was still pretty soft in hand. It was flatter than windmills. I would wear this out for a long trip in the summer no problem. This would be just fine in a single layer carry with a toddler, but multi-layer carries are where the magic happens! This rocked a double hammock like nobody’s business. The knots all stayed in place incredibly well! I was so impressed. It also was good with a ring finish. The width of this wrap easily handled all 35 inches of Maxine. I recommend this wrap to new wrappers up through wrapping pros. If you like medium/thin wraps that are smooth but just enough grip to keep those passes in place, this is the wrap for you!

Review: Nunamoochie Anya

Remember that awesome budget handwoven from Nunamoochie that I reviewed back in February? Today I have the more colorful sister to that wrap!

11140408_1085577481469841_6902754561777747207_n

Nunamoochie Anya is a 100% cotton handwoven wrap that is thin and beautifully lightweight. The colors are remiscent of a “tequila sunrise” and it is the first wrap to feature the color pink for them. It is named Anya in honor of Colleen and Tanni’s  (the owners)  first baby girl.

I am going to compare this wrap to Retro quite a bit because the two are so similar, but so different! Maxine is now 28 pounds and around 33 inches tall so she is only 5 pounds heavier than when Retro came to Chesapeake. Like Retro, this wrap molds so well to our bodies!

The front wrap cross carry (FWCC) is so comfortable! Though thinner than Retro, Anya was comfortable on my shoulders with a toddler. It is incredibly soft. This was my favorite carry with Anya. The next carry I tried was a ruck finished knotless. This wrap is great for a ruck because it is nice and wide.

Another carry I tried was the Half-FWCC because I needed to see a slipknot with this wrap. I think the plus of a thinner wrap is that the slipknot is very manageable. It stayed in place once tightened. The slipknot in in Retro was not as solid as with Anya in my experience.

Anya ROCKED a torso carry so well! Double hammock torso  was so comfortable and thanks to the width of Anya, it felt even more secure. I also did Jasmine’s tandem carry for fun. Owen  and Maxine loved it. Sixty pounds of kid only stayed up for about 15 minutes total because HEAVY but I feel like this would be an awesome wrap for tandem wearing lighter babies.

Just like Retro, Anya is airy, soft, and so easy to wrap with. This wrap will be great for beginners and experienced wrappers alike. It requires next to no breaking in. This wraps true to size and it shines in a base size with toddlers! I bet it would be comfortable in a shorty for smaller babies.

Review: Nunamoochie Retro Handwoven

Nunamoochie is a brand that I have reviewed before, and now they have a new line of handwoven wraps! Retro is the first of (hopefully) many handwoven wraps that they are releasing. This wrap is called retro because it reminded Nunamoochie’s owner of the black and white on old televisions.

IMG_0364

Nunamoochie wraps come ready to wear. Retro was so soft right out of the package! It is a thin/medium weight 100% organic cotton wrap. This wrap was great for 31 inches and 23 pounds of toddler but Retro is perfect for new babies as well! It is molds so well to our bodies and that is important for me. At 28 inches wide, I was easily able to get a great seat without being too overwhelmed by width. My first carry was a front wrap cross carry and it was incredibly comfortable on my shoulders.

003

The next carry that I tried is a new favorite of mine, Charlie’s Cross Carry. This wrap basically wrapped itself. The chest pass was incredibly easy to make and it did not take a lot of adjusting to make it even and it makes an excellent flipped chest pass as well. I did a ruck tied Tibetan finished knotless which is one of my go-to carries. This was my favorite carry with Retro.

This wrap holds knots in place pretty well. A half knot is snug, but a double knot is ideal.  The slipknot I made needed a little adjusting after having Maxine up for a while.

005

This wrap is airy, incredibly soft, and the passes glide easily in place. There is some diagonal stretch, but nothing too crazy. I would recommend this wrap to anyone. It isn’t hard to break in at all and it basically wraps itself. This wrap is similar to the other Nunamoochie wraps in that it is soft, but it I can’t compare this to another handwoven. This is so much softer and more pleasant than the other few handwoven wraps that I have tried! This wraps true to size and it shines in a base size!

002

I can’t wait to see what other handwoven wraps Nunamoochie releases!
